From morning to night
We work to make our lives better
But then
At the same time
How many of us
Have some addiction we are fighting
And that addiction
Is simply put
Self harm
Whether it’s too much food,
Gambling or a shot in the arm
Is simply
Self harm
We run run run
Complaining about ‘the man’
Rushing through our days
Trying to stick to the plan
But we can’t outrun addiction
At some point
When we’re too tired of running
Maybe we can sit down
And make peace
We can look at this thing we do
To ourselves
By ourselves
We can look at this self harm
And cradle it
And let it release its grip on our arm
Whether it’s too little food
Or anger or a shot in the arm
Let’s find a way to let go of
Self harm

About the poem:
I find addiction fascinating. It’s grip on a person somehow from the person themselves can be so tight for so long, but also so suddenly released. It is a real problem for, I guess, most humans. And I believe, most can recover. We need to not give up hope, to not give up on ourselves, to keep trying to find the key that unlocks the handcuffs of addiction.
On a lighter note, did you catch the self-confession in Despicable Me 2. Hilarious assessment:
Girl: How come you’re so fat?
Gru: Because, my house is made of candy, and sometimes, I eat instead of facing my problems!
