Poem: Almost

Our two cars came careening out of little used roads
Nearly smack dab into each other
I didn’t see the car
I almost hit it
And in that next instant
I suddenly felt the aliveness
That had been there the moment before
But I almost missed it
How can I be so forgetful
To dismiss
A moment
A life
Such as this
It was whizzing by
My mind was not here
Then I paused
And I caught it
I was it
But it was close
I almost missed it
