Poem: The Wave Soon Passes

In a peaceful pause
I rest, though
I know the next wave
Is forming

So dramatic
So unpredictable
Approaching, rising, looming

What to do…hmm

Fight it?
Ride it?
Or duck under and skip it?

No matter what I choose
The wave soon passes

In a peaceful pause
I rest, though
I know the next wave
Is forming

About the poem:
Last weekend, I was swimming at Samyang Beach on Jeju Island, South Korea. The waves were just big enough that I had to pay attention. I could choose to fight them, ride them or just do a porpoise dive right under the foam and pop up easily after it passed.

It reminded me of our daily challenges. We can often make a big deal of them and fight them, or ride them, or just quickly duck under them. Then pause, then deal with whatever is next.

Wouldn’t it be silly to curse the wave and complain about it all day, as if each wave was a surprising injustice and an insult to our plan?
